THE BIG READ: Julie Rivett at Barnes & Noble 10/23/09
Kennewick, WA - Julie Rivett, granddaughter and biographer of Dashiell Hammett, will speak at Barnes & Noble this Friday about her grandfather’s literary career. Her presentation, “From Pulps to Pop Culture: The Literature & Legacy of Dashiell Hammett,” will recount Hammett’s journey from the pulp fiction marketplace to the halls of American literary and popular culture. Her presentation is sponsored by Barnes & Noble and Mid-Columbia Libraries, and is free and open to the public.
Her appearance is the keynote presentation in Mid-Columbia Libraries’ month-long reading program, The Big Read. For the inaugural program, Mid-Columbia Libraries is featuring Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon throughout October. His novel – a brilliant literary work, as well as a thriller, a love story, and a dark, dry comedy – set the standard by which all subsequent detective fiction would be judged.
The Big Read is designed to restore reading to the center of American popular culture. It gives communities the opportunity to come together to read, discuss, and celebrate great literature. Mid-Columbia Libraries has been awarded a $20,000 grant (the maximum award) from the National Endowment for the Arts to host The Big Read throughout the region. Visit www.midcolumbiareads.com for event listings and more. The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest. In the Pacific Northwest, The Big Read is supported, in part, by a grant from the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation.
