Love and Felt Pieces

Can you tell a story over and over again?  Can you keep the children excited about the Billy Goats Gruff and the Troll who is as mean as he is ugly?

How about you?  Do you ever wish for a new idea for story time?  I have some felt board ideas for you!  (Okay, I’ll admit that I hated felt boards when I first did story times at my mother-in-law’s daycare. But, as a children’s librarian, I became a big fan.  Just try it!)

Use templates to cut out some felt pieces for a book such as “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?”  (http://www.dltk-teach.com/books/brownbear/index.htm)   Give each child an animal.  As you read the story, have the children bring up the appropriate animals and put them on the board.   Then, reverse the process and put up the felt pieces while the children re-tell the story!

Need more info?  http://earlylit.net/wordpress/ has great activities for story time and links to templates for making felt pieces.  Or come to your local MCL branch and check out how we do story time.
